Overtime rules

Federal (FLSA): 1.5× the regular rate for hours over 40 in a fixed 7-day workweek (DOL). California: 1.5× over 8 hours/day or 40/week, 2× over 12 hours/day (DIR). Track a full week with the time card calculator with overtime, or see the no tax on overtime deduction.

Frequently asked questions

What is time and a half?

Your regular hourly rate multiplied by 1.5. At $20/hour, time and a half is $30/hour.

Who is entitled to overtime?

Non-exempt employees covered by the FLSA. Many salaried workers earning under the federal salary threshold are also non-exempt. Check the DOL’s overtime guidance at dol.gov/agencies/whd/overtime.

When do I get double time?

Federal law does not require double time. California requires 2× pay for hours over 12 in a day and over 8 on the seventh consecutive workday.
