Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours on a time card?
For each day subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, subtract unpaid breaks, then add up the days. Convert minutes to decimal by dividing by 60 (e.g. 45 minutes = 0.75 hours) before multiplying by your hourly rate.
How is overtime calculated?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. California also requires overtime after 8 hours in a day and double time after 12 hours.
Does this calculator handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time (for example 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), the shift is treated as crossing midnight.
